The world we live in today can be a noisy place. There is always someone or something attempting to get our attention. Ads are relentless, jobs are demanding and our phones are highly addictive. It’s not an easy task to just be quiet for even 10 minutes. Our phones are particularly good at getting our attention, even our thoughts are highly engaging. The consequence of all this attention deficiency is that the spiritual aspect cannot flourish under constant bombardment. It has become increasingly important that we cultivate that inner peace, the silence within.
So how do you block out the noise and have a quieter mind? The answer is, observe. Yes, observation is one of the best ways to bring about peace to our minds. Whenever there is noise in the mind, we simply just need to observe ourselves. Notice the noise but don’t don’t give it too much attention, simply acknowledge it. There is no need to force it out or try too hard. It’s kind of like watching the traffic go by, we see the cars (noises) but we don’t need to get on them. We simply become the observer of the traffic.
The traffic and the observer are in fact the same thing, it’s like two sides of the same coin. We are both the traffic and the observer. But the idea is to establish a distance between the observer and the traffic. The traffic is the part of ourselves that we are familiar with, so familiar that we have claimed it as our sole identity. The observer is what we need to awaken. The observer is a heightened version, a more conscious version of ourselves. Once we can separate the two we will be able to find peace.
