For many people, it’s been a tumultuous year to say the least. And it’s as if things weren’t dramatic enough, there’s the US election to top it off. It’s full of twists, suspense and emotions. The outcome may be a singular one, but no one really could have predicted how it unfolded. Naturally, some people got what they wanted and feel ecstatic, while some people probably feel pretty despondent. After all, it’s a bit of a zero sum game. But whatever one’s state may be, it’s safe to say that things don’t always go according to our scripts.
Let’s put politics aside. It’s very easy to get caught up in the daily drama that takes place around us. Whether it’s the economy, the lockdown, or the pandemic, many of these events are outside of our control. We may have a preference on how things ought to be but ultimately we won’t have full control over these things. There are simply too many forces at play. In times like these, it’s very important for us to have something to fall back on. Whether it’s the support of our loved ones or with our communities, it helps to have a bigger perspective towards life. It shouldn’t be just about politics or the state of the economy, there are bigger things outside ourselves that could provide us a sense of reassurance and refuge.
We all long for a perspective that gives us hope and meaning so that we can move forward in life. When things don’t go our way the desire to connect to a greater ‘truth’ becomes even stronger. Religions and various spiritual practices certainly reflect this desire we have, one can probably call this the connection with divinity or consciousness. It’s also a source of profound comfort and power. Let us remind ourselves, as often as possible, that there’s a better script out there that’s better than the one the media or our society want us to have. This script provides a bigger and better perspective that allows us to connect to something bigger than ourselves. The good news is we can all access it if we want to.
