Be Comfortable With Yourself Now

Would you trade your current situation with someone whose life situation is in a better place? Materially speaking. A friend and I were chatting recently and this question popped up during our conversation. He asked me if I’d like to be in the shoes of a celebrity who is both good-looking and well-off. It’s an interesting question and made me ponder.

After some thought I told him no. I wouldn’t trade my current life situation with someone who is more well-off and good-looking, or is at a better place in life. I must say these qualities are very tempting and it would seem stupid not to opt for the trade. By the way, the condition is that you get to keep your way of thinking so you only trade your physical situation and your body. It’s not a bad trade, really.

Soon after, I thought about why I chose not to trade for a supposedly ‘better life’. I think it really depends on how you view yourself at this very moment. How comfortable are you right now? Are you unsatisfied with your current situation?

Which One Would You Choose?

As an experiment, let’s explore the two possible answers.

If your answer is you’d like to trade your current life situation with someone who is more well-off, it means that you are not happy with your current situation. You believe there is something better out there. You are dismissing your current situation because you think it’s an inferior one. I am not sure if this is a healthy way of looking at things.

If your answer is that you are happy with being who you are right now, it means you are not looking for something that’s better, you are simply content with yourself right now. This doesn’t mean you are free of any problems and that there’s nothing you need to do to improve your current situation. It’s more of a mental state than actual life situation.

So which one would you choose? Would you want to be someone else who is better looking and more well-off? Or are you happy being the way you are right now?

I need to make one thing clear. It’s not an issue to want to make improvements to your life situation. We all want to progress and do better for ourselves. That’s not really the point I am trying to make. It’s more a question for the mind. How comfortable are you with your current state of mind?

Accept Yourself Now

It is my belief that one must accept oneself totally in order to move forward. The acceptance should take place in this very moment. Call it contentment, or peace of mind. It’s our current state of mind. This is where happiness is generated. Without this starting point, no matter how much you seek to change materially, you will still feel inadequate or lacking.

It’s hard to give a detailed explanation as to why it’s important. It’s more of a conclusion I have reached based on many spiritual teachings I have come across. If I were to sum it up in one sentence, it would be something like this, ‘If you look deep enough within yourself, you would realise that you already have everything you need to achieve whatever you want to achieve and it’s a great feeling.’
