Old Structures

For something new to emerge, first we need to allow the old structure come down. Perhaps it’s quite a timely topic in these times when it feels like there is so much chaos and there is a strong desire for change. But I am really referring to the inner state of ourselves. I am referring to our mental structures, values, concepts and beliefs. From childhood to adulthood, we have been conditioned to think in a certain way, usually according to the societies we happen to live in.

We have views on just about everything and anything. These views come from our families and friends as well as norms, cultures and anything we consume to gather information. These values have served us and allowed us to build societies. But there comes a time when the values don’t serve us as well as they used to. What’s considered as virtuous one hundred years ago may not be deemed appropriate based on today’s norms. Our values change through time. The old dies to make way for the new. Spirituality touches on this phenomenon and takes it further – everything we value will eventually die and nothing is permanent.

Spirituality is about recognising that all our mental structures will one day become old structures and therefore will not last. These structures are basically our values and beliefs that have shaped our society. But these structures are also what we have long been clinging on so tightly. When they go through the process of renewal, it can be a painful experience for people who identify with them strongly. This usually causes suffering. Alternatively, we can also choose to actively recognise and accept their impermanent nature. This way we go through life with ease and grace.
