So Close And Yet So Far

Have you ever come close to getting something but only to see it taken away from you at the last minute? Seeing it in front of you but not able to get it, it’s a devastating feeling and it’s perhaps more cruel than having nothing at all in the first place. Whether it’s something trivial or life-changing, it seems like a fairly common occurrence of life. We see it in sports, at work, at home and various other life situations. All is well until it isn’t. It’s a reality of life.

Things are complicated and often work in intricate ways. One small decision could have enormous consequences. One little mistake could end up costing you dearly. I have seen it in sport matches where a single point changed the course of the match. On a more serious note, I have also witnessed a family member who experienced miscarriage, it’s a heartbreaking experience. I am sure you can also tell me a similar experience. But after such experiences, the subsequent feeling is the feeling of regret and guilt. But it’s important to note that often these things are usually out of our control, or at least not entirely within our control. There is a bit of luck involved. We shouldn’t really blame ourselves unnecessarily.

How To Deal With It?

How can we deal with such events? There is really no one-size-fits-all fix. First, we need to accept things as they are and move on. We can’t change what’s already happened so we must accept it in order to move on. Secondly, we need to do what we can, one small step at a time. We shouldn’t focus on the overall situation too much as that’s too intimidating. Usually the things we can do are right in front of us and smaller steps are way less daunting. By focusing on our immediate tasks at hand, we also block out the noise. Lastly, it’s important to stay positive (as much as possible) and never give up. Often times we can’t afford to be negative because that will just eliminate our chances even further. We might as well give it our best shot and look on the bright side.

Life can sometimes throw curve balls at you and catch you off guard. It’s a reality we need to accept. Sometimes everything seems to go well until the last moment when things suddenly go south. The best things we can do is to accept things as they are, focus on the immediate tasks at hand and remain positive. We should also remind ourselves to never give up because you never really know what’s around the next corner. When one door closes, another opens.
